Album · 1997 · 13 Songs. Lovergirl: The Teena Marie Story Teena Marie.
Her output for the Epic label was particularly ahead of its time, veering from sassy funk ( Fix It ) to tormented torch balladry ( Casanova Brown ) and gossamer soul ( Stop the World, Just Us Two ) with distinctive intelligence and taste. Lovergirl: The Teena Marie Story gathers the highlights of this fruitful period in Marie’s career in one succinct package

The discography of Teena Marie, the American Grammy Award-nominated R&B singer–songwriter–producer, consists of 14 studio albums, 11 compilation albums, and 30 singles since her debut album Wild and Peaceful in 1979. She has been awarded with two gold albums and has 6 top-ten albums and 7 top-ten singles on the United States R&B charts.
Lovergirl: The Teena Marie Story collects all of Marie's mid-'80s hits for Epic, including "Lovergirl," "Work It," "If I Were a Bell," "Just Us Two," "Jammin'," and "Ooo La La L. While some casual listeners will find the inclusion of 12" extended mixes somewhat redundant, those mixes actually give a better idea of how Marie's music was appreciated during the time, and makes Lovergirl a fine greatest-hits compilation.

Teena Marie is a Rick James protégé and blue-eyed soul singer who became one of the few female singers in the business to write, arrange and produce her own songs. This was Teena's biggest hit, although she scored many Top 10 hits on the R&B charts and is widely known and respected in the world of funk. She moved on to Epic Records, releasing the album Robbery in 1983 and Starchild in 1984, which produced her first pop hit, "Lovergirl. You can hear the Rick James influence in this song, as Marie used her exceptional voice to do a little pseudo-rap at the end of the song and sprinkled some operatic elements throughout the song. Check out James' "Super Freak" and you'll hear some creative vocals and a classical influence that shows up on this track. More songs from Teena Marie.
