Cosmic Thing is the fifth studio album by American new wave band the B-52's, released in 1989. It contains the singles "Love Shack" and "Roam". The success of the album served as a comeback after the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson in 1985. Six of the album's songs were produced by Nile Rodgers in New York City, and the remaining four by Don Was in upstate New York. The band embarked on the Cosmic Tour to promote the album.
At heart, Cosmic Thing is a dance-your-ass-off soiree. Leader Fred Schneider delights in kitsch, his deliveries combining goofy pronouncements and half-rapped words that speak the co-ed ensemble's long tradition of originality, flair, campiness, and irreverence. Better still is the band's embrace of a shinier, funkier sound established by producers Don Was and Nile Rodgers. The B-52’s spent the last part of the ‘70s and the first half of the ‘80s as one of the coolest, goofiest groups around, forging a solid reputation as a fun-time party band through such singles as Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, and so on down the line, but with the death of founding member Ricky Wilson in 1985
Granted, the album was completed in the wake of Ricky Wilson's death, but the group appeared bereft of new musical ideas and were sounding rather stale. In other words, the last thing anyone expected was a first-class return to form, which is what they got with Cosmic Thing. Working with producers Don Was and Nile Rodgers, the B-52's updated their sound with shiny new surfaces and deep, funky grooves - it was the same basic pattern as before, only refurbished and contemporized
The 1989 long-player was a big success at the time, spawning the transatlantic top five hit ‘Love Shack’ and ‘Roam’ (also top five in the USA). Cosmic Thing will be reissued on 28 June 2019.

Eventually all four surviving members of the B-52's would agree to find an apt studio location to begin fleshing out the cache of songs that would become Cosmic Thing. They chose two distinct locations: Sigma Sound Studios in New York City, where they would cut the majority of the material with Nile Rodgers of Chic.
The B-52s went through some rough times in the years leading up to this song. In 1985, their guitarist, Ricky Wilson, died of AIDS at age 32. Even before his death, they were on the verge of a breakup, with low sales and creative ennui. The four remaining members regrouped in 1987 and found a new creative energy, sparked by this song. When the Cosmic Thing album was released in 1989, it was the breakthrough they needed. More songs from The B-52s. More songs used in movies. More songs produced by Nile Rodgers. More songs from 1988.
