Just what the Romantic Piano Concerto series does best: three works unlikely to be encountered in the concert hall, in performances by artists who wholeheartedly-and justifiably-believe in the music. The high expectations of this series are amply realized in volume seventy-six. Le début brusque, une mise en éveil, promet de la musique à grande échelle, hantée par des souvenirs du concerto l’empereur de Beethoven, le soliste développant vite son entrée dans un tourbillon d’événements avec des doubles notes pour ajouter de l’ampleur et de la texture. Cependant, il n’y a pas la moindre trace de ce genre d’écriture qui plaisait tellement aux auditoires de soi-disant joyaux musicaux. Le second sujet offre un contraste assez lyrique et l’on perçoit ensuite l’influence de Schumann, notamment dans sa passion pour les rythmes pointés.
