Vex Red formed in 1995 in Aldershot, United Kingdom. The band self released two demo records in the late 1990's one titled "Vex Red" released in 1998 and the second "Sleep Does Nothing for You" the following year. In 1999 the band recruited vocalist and guitarist Terry Abbot to complete the line up. Entering into a demo tape competition by Kerrang! and Ross Robinson the band were quickly signed to Robinson's Virgin Records imprint, I A. .In 2001 the band released their first single "Itch". The band's debut album produced by Ross Robinson, "Start with a Strong and Persistent Desire" was released on 4 March 2002. The album charted at number 48 on the UK Albums Chart and also spent two weeks on the chart. Shortly after the release of the debut album the band were dissatisfied with their time on Robinson's I Am record label decided to leave the label.

Start with a Strong and Persistent Desire is the debut album by English alternative rock band Vex Red. It was released on 4 March 2002 through I Am records. Two singles were released from the album. Itch" was released in 2001, followed by "Can't Smile" in 2002 which reached number 45 in the UK Singles Chart.

Vex Red have made probably the best British nu metal album still today, but have more than a nu metal genre, the ambient, electronic parts and also the acoustic chords made this album something different to the USA scene. Step forward, Vex Red. Maybe along with the aforementioned UK acts, it can happen. The story goes (if you've not heard it before) that Ross Robinson, the man responsible for Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and At the Drive In, signed the band on the strength of a crappy demo tape. Something that doesn't happen every day in Aldershot. The album opens with the adrenalin-fuelled "The Closest" and "Dermo", two songs full of strong guitars and blistering electrical energy, but things really start to get interesting by track 3 - "Can't Smile" is pure quality; here.

Start With A Strong and Persistent Desire almost never got a chance to start at all. Aldershot's Vex Red spent a couple of years playing Home Counties toilets for little praise and less money. The album poses a great offering for the Brit scene and an amazing debut for Vex Red that'll be hard to follow up. Overall an album of crushing rock riffs supporting angst ridden vocals, amalgamated with complex electronics and immaculate mixing. If your looking for a taster find "Can't Smile", "Itch", "Bully Me", "Start With A Strong And Persistent Desire", and personal fave's "Clone Jesus" and "Vert".
