Songs & Rhymes From Jamaica. Linstead Market is a Calypso song about a mother who goes to the Linstead Market to sell her ackee fruit (see photo), but she doesn't sell any. Meanwhile the kids are hungry, and in the end, the mother wonders how she's going to feed them. I carry mi ackee, go a Linstead Market Not a quattie worth sell I carry me ackee, go a Linstead Market Not a quattie worth sell. Chorus) Lawd what a night, not a bite What a Saturday night Lawd what a night not a bite What a Saturday night. Everybody come feel up, feel up Not a quattie worth sell Everybody come feel up, feel up Not a quattie worth sell.

Among the best known Jamaican folk songs are "Day-O (Banana Boat Song)", "Jamaica Farewell" (Iron Bar), and "Linstead Market". The first two of these were popularized by Harry Belafonte. The third has come a long way since its appearance among Jekyll's 108 Jamaican folk songs. Not only has "Linstead Market" been arranged for solo voice and piano and for performance by choirs, but also, it was arranged for congregational singing in 1975 and now appears in at least five hymnals.

Liza -Waata come a mi y’eye. I ran into a local book store recently and found what I consider to be a great compilation of these and more of the best Jamaican folk songs. Even better, it includes the sheet music for those who wish to play it on Piano or as instrumental. It is called MANGO TIME - FOLKS SONGS OF JAMAICA by Noel Dexter and Godfrey Taylor.
