Long Player – consisting of Darren Mathiassen (Rhombus, Trinity Roots) on drums, Crete Haami (Police Lucifer and Residue) on bass guitar and Jeremy Toy (writer and producer in Opensouls) on guitar. Also guesting on the album is a roll of other New Zealand soul and jazz musos, including members of Opensouls, Jonathan Crayford and Mark de Clive Lowe A major component of Long Player is the combination of outstanding vocalists and arrangements, along with Smith's lead vocals are an "All Star" line-up of backing vocalists Deva Mahal (Rhombus), Lisa Tomlins.
Long Player, from 1971, was the second album by the British rock group Faces. Among the highlights are a live cover version of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed", the wistful "Richmond" and "Sweet Lady Mary", the rave-up "Had Me a Real Good Time" and the opening "Bad 'n' Ruin". Maybe I'm Amazed" and "I Feel So Good" were recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York on October 11 1970.
Hollie Smith’s deep, rich and soulful singing and songwriting style proves she is one to watch in 2007, her vocals on the hit soul song penned by Don McGlashan Bathe In The River introduced her name to the wider community.
