The Clash is the debut studio album by English punk rock band the Clash. It was released on 8 April 1977 through CBS Records. Written and recorded over three weeks in February of 1977 for a paltry £4,000, it would go one to reach on the UK charts, and has been included on many retrospective rankings as one of the greatest punk albums of all time
The only up-close and personal film about the juggernaut band The Clash and their meteoric trajectory through rock ‘n roll history, The Rise and Fall of The Clash features previously unseen footage of the band at work and at play, as well as interviews with the individual band members and with those who knew them well. This is not a film that pulls any punches, but neither does it overlook the life-changing effect that The Clash brought to so many. The album was released on 27 October 1977 through Virgin Records amid controversy arising from the use of the coarse slang word (in British English) "bollocks" in its title. Older versions of most of the album's songs also appeared on a bootleg album called Spunk, which consists of demo recordings the band had made during 1976 and January 1977, and which was released shortly before Never Mind The Bollocks. Front Desk Agent Josh Justice does some armchair investigative work to uncover the truth about the filming of The Clash's iconic Rock The Casbah video in Austin.
First, for the non-fans, I must point out that The Rise and Fall of the Clash is not a thorough documentary about the group. Most of their early years are barely mentioned and the film really centers on what happened to the band after they began to gain worldwide fame and why the group never really maintained their full potential. And, according to these same folks, he sought to deliberately change the band's sound-creating music that everyone was apparently in the band was ashamed of in their final album. How true all this is, I have no idea whatsoever but it is all quite interesting-albeit a bit confusing as I knew none of the band's back story and needed to stop the film a few times to ask my friend, Guy, what exactly was occurring. And now for the fans, this film is excellent because it explains how and why the lineup and style of the band changed so much over the years.
David Bowie, ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars’. This album documents one of the most elaborate self-mythologizing schemes in rock, as David Bowie created the glittery, messianic alter ego Ziggy Stardust ("well-hung and snow-white tan"). The glam rock Bowie made with guitarist Mick Ronson on tracks like "Hang on to Yourself" and "Suffragette City" is an irresistible blend of sexy, campy pop and blues power. One of the most moving songs is "Running to Stand Still," a stripped-down slide-guitar ballad about heroin addiction, but for the most part this is an album that turns spiritual quests and political struggles into uplifting stadium singalongs: See hits like "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," a rock anthem.
