The Fleetwoods were an American singing group from Olympia, Washington, whose members were Gary Troxel, Gretchen Christopher, and Barbara Ellis. 122 Related Articles. An earlier recording of the song had been made by the Fleetwoods for their January 1965 album Before and After; the title track was stylized as "Before and After (Losing You)" and released as an unsuccessful single release that February. The Fleetwoods' first hit was "Come Softly to Me", which was also covered by others. The UK's Frankie Vaughan and The Kaye Sisters had a Top 10 chart hit in the United Kingdom with the song, though The Fleetwoods exceeded them, simultaneously charting in the UK's Top . .Their second hit, "Graduation's Here" was co-written by Ellis and Christopher, with Troxel later adding a scat line in counterpoint. That one was followed by "Mr. Blue," which, like "Come Softly To Me", also topped the pop charts  . Before And After (1965).

After a long night’s work, a demo was dropped off at Los Angeles radio station KFWB just before six o’clock in the morning. After the song aired only once, the phones blew off the hook. The Fleetwoods first album Mr. Blue was released in October 1959 and it told more about Dolton Records than it did about the group. The cover featured Barbara and Gretchen in low cut prom dresses wearing little tiaras on their heads. The Fleetwoods-Gretchen, Gary and Barbara was released on September 1, 1960, with some great non hit tracks including covers of Bud and Travis’ Truly Do and the Tune Weavers’ Happy Happy Birthday Baby. This album also featured such classics as Bye Bye Blackbird and Turtle Dove.

Come Softly to Me" is a popular song written by Gretchen Christopher that was performed by The Fleetwoods, composed of Christopher, Barbara Ellis, and Gary Troxel. The original title was "Come Softly," but was changed en route to its becoming a hit. Bob Reisdorf, the owner of Dolphin Records, which in 1960 changed to Dolton Records, was responsible for the title change.
