The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The line-up of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr led them to be regarded as the most influential band of all time. With a sound rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock and roll, the group were integral to the evolution of pop music into an art form, and to the development of the counterculture of the 1960s.

In their native United Kingdom, between 1962 and 1970, the Beatles released 12 studio albums, 13 extended plays (EPs) and 22 singles. The Beatles' discography was originally released on the vinyl format, with full-length long plays (LPs), shorter EPs and singles.

The Beatles In Hamburg contains Leigh's usual hallmarks: authoritative, thorough and enlightening, with various myths debunked, new stories told and long-overlooked characters interviewed. The book concludes with items on the Live At The Star-Club album, The Beatles' brief 1966 tour of Germany, and what happened to St Pauli after they left. It takes us to the latter days: the 1994 film Backbeat, McCartney's 1989, 2003 and 2009 visits to the city, and the 2008 opening of the Beatle-Platz square and the excellent Beatlemania museum.

The Beatles' formative years in the clubs of Hamburg have tended to be somewhat underrepresented in the band's carefully regulated canon of official releases. Stories about the Beatles' excess during the years before their success are common, and on THE SAVAGE BEATLES, interviews with Pete Best (who had yet to be ousted when these recordings were done), the other Beatles and band "handler" Horst Fasher describe an oat-sowing of the wildest variety.

The Beatles members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best regularly performed at different clubs in Hamburg, Northern Germany, during the period from August 1960 to December 1962; a chapter in the group's history which honed their performance skills, widened their reputation, and led to their first recording, which brought them to the attention of Brian Epstein.
