from the album Since I Saw You Last. Since I Saw You Last" tells the story of Barlow's struggle to become a successful solo artist after Take That split in 1996, and how the media backlash against him in favour of bandmate Robbie Williams left him in the verge of breakdown, leading to his eventual departure from his record label. Barlow described this song to Graham Norton as the song he always wanted to write but it was only now, after the success of Take That and his solo success that he felt it was time to record the song and release it as a single.
Since I Saw You Last. Since I Saw You Last. Perhaps the title Since I Saw You Last is a winking allusion to the long time between Gary Barlow's solo records: disregarding the 2012 EP Sing, he's been silent since 1999's Twelve Months, Eleven Days, choosing to shelve his solo career when Take That reunited in 2005. At the close of the millennium, Barlow was pursuing the traditional path of a balladeer, taking his cues from George Michael in particular and latter-day Elton John in general

The title track and 3rd single of Since I Saw You Last. The song’s about the fact that, after all the ridicule Gary suffered from the media after the split of Take That in the 90s, he’s been vindicated by history, as he’s more succesful than ever before. Throughout ‘Since I Saw You Last’ there are clues that Barlow is taking notes from Britain’s pop success stories, old and new. Opener ‘Requiem’ has more than a hint of Sgt Pepper-era Macca; a mid-record lull comes courtesy of Sir Cliff; and in the more up-to-date moments of ‘Let Me Go’ and ‘This House’ there’s a strong whiff of Mumford. The difficulty lies in Barlow’s too finely honed skills as a musical chameleon: despite its presence on a gamut of hits from the last 20 years, his voice is entirely anonymous.
