You Give Me Something" is the second single from British funk/acid jazz band Jamiroquai's fifth studio album, A Funk Odyssey. The song was written by Jason Kay. The song peaked at 16 on the UK Singles Chart. The song is inspired by funk and disco theme, as implied by the album's title itself, A Funk Odyssey. A definitive protest album and a departure from the psychedelic soul that fueled the band’s rise, There’s A Riot Goin’ On is as much about the struggles Black Americans still faced after the Civil Rights Movement as it is about Sly’s own demons. Tension between bandmates, demanding record executives and rampant drug use, coupled with frequent overdubbing in the album’s mix, gave way to a hazy sound that embodied the social climate of the early ‘70s. His punk funk manifesto, Street Songs, went triple-platinum thanks to the aggressive, fuzzed-out synth of Give It to Me Baby, Super Freak and Ghetto Life.
This album is incredible, truly one of the greatest records in pop music history. To put it simply, it is an album that defines a genre. Of course there are older funk albums which laid out the groundwork, but ONE NATION was a recording that combined the various elements that Funk music had incorporated over the years and crammed it all into one amazing album. The singles Superfreak, Ghetto Life and Give It To Me Baby all topped the dance charts in the US, and the album managed to breathe new life into a Motown label, which at the time was struggling to release hit albums.
Released late in 2016, Loveline is a funk album full of deep synth bass tracks, talkbox, stabbing keyboards and thumping bass lines. The sound that made the mid-80’s what they were, it’s undeniable and unmistakable. This is Diamond Ortiz‘s first release for MoFunk Records and we’re already anxious to hear his next release. So Imagine our surprise when 2016 still managed to give us one last chance to pay homage to one of the best funk jam bands to grace festival stages. The Last Leaf was recorded back on May 6th in 2013 and was their last show performing together. Everything was captured brilliantly from the band’s energetic performances to the crowd’s intense appreciation from one of funk’s finest. Great music on this list. U missed some Bay Area Funk so here’s a clip. com/watch?v pmuz-O8Q0JQ.
