The Flying Nun is an American sitcom produced by Screen Gems for ABC based on the 1965 book The Fifteenth Pelican, written by Tere Rios. It starred Sally Field as Sister Bertrille. The series originally ran on ABC from September 7, 1967, to September 18, 1970, producing 82 episodes, including a one-hour pilot episode. Developed by Bernard Slade, the series centered on the adventures of a community of nuns in the Convent San Tanco in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Sally Field has no special feelings toward it. She claims it almost ruined her career. The show is based on a children's book called The 15th Pelican. Field plays Sister Bertrille, a 98 pound nun from the United States of America who is transfered to a crumbling church in Puerto Rico. Her clothing and the strong tropical winds give her the ability to fly. The Flying Nun was spoofed on The Simpsons with Bart waiting for Homer to pick him up from soccer practice. During a storm, Bart sees Sister Bertrille smash into a hill and explode into a fireball . I'm a big fan of the 60's sitcoms, when innocence still dominated prime-time. The Flying Nun is a perfect example of how much fun television used to be. Sally Field was perfect for this role. She was bright, energetic, and funny.
Think about it: From Gidget and The Flying Nun to Sybil, Norma Rae and Places in the Heart to her acting on Broadway in Edward Albee’s The Goat –her range is beyond remarkable. I remember the first time I saw Sybil (for which she won an Emmy Award) I was so stunned by the way she embodied all the different personalities that I couldn’t speak for awhile afterwards. She always brings 200% of herself to every role, sinks down deep into the persona in a way that is very unusual. Then there’s Sally the person . Here we are with members of the Los Angeles City Council who also came to honor Sally. I wish I’d gotten a photo of her son, Eli and his young son. Eli is the spitting image of his mother.
Afterward, she portrayed Sister Bertrille, the comic novice nun, in the ABC sitcom The Flying Nun (1967-1970). In 1967, Field made her feature film debut in the epic western based on the novel by A. B. Guthrie, J. The Way West, with Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, and Richard Widmark
