This experimentation continued through their ninth album, Pop (1997), and the PopMart Tour, which were mixed successes. U2 regained critical and commercial favour with the records All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (2004), which established a more conventional, mainstream sound for the group. After the October Tour, U2 decamped to a rented cottage in Howth, where they lived, wrote new songs, and rehearsed for their third album, War. Significant musical breakthroughs were achieved by the Edge in August 1982 during a two-week period of independent songwriting, while the other band members vacationed and Bono honeymooned with his wife Ali. From September to November, the group recorded War at Windmill Lane Studios.
In Japan at the time, an extra track was added to CDs to make them a more desirable purchase which explains why the Japanese release of Pop included an extra track, Holy Joe (Guilty Mix). Holy Joe was only performed live during U2's press conference held in a Manhattan K-mart when they announced their tour dates. Holy Joe can also be found as a b-side on many of the Discotheque singles

Looking back years later, U2 said the album was marred by their foolish decision to book a stadium tour long before it was ready. Deadlines were looming.
In this album, you have rock and roll tuned up all the way to eleven, and you have the electronic music up to eleven as well. And they both combine so well, and both live their own lives on the record, and yet learn to coexist with such success. If you want to have a way to think about Pop, think about it as a collection of truly strong, truly powerful melodies arranged in the best ways you can possibly think of, with great memorable electronic sounds. This album has everything a music lover can want. To me personally U2 would have never been U2 without this album. This is pretty much the.

Their U2 360° Tour of 2009–2011 is the highest-attended and highest-grossing concert tour in history
