Frederick Riddle (1912–1995) was a prominent British violist, one of the brightest performers of the British viola school alongside with Lionel Tertis and William Primrose whose traditions are continued today by Lawrence Power (2) and other modern violists. Fred Riddle graduated from the Royal College of Music, London in 1933 and started his career both as a solo performer and with The London Symphony Orchestra (1933–38). I first became acquainted with Dohnányi’s O. 0 Serenade for string trio in the ermann recording of 1941. Berkeley’s String Trio, Op. 19, dates from 1943, and bears a dedication to Frederick Grinke, Watson Forbes and James Phillips, the trio who premiered the score at the Wigmore Hall in 1944. In three movements, the outer ones sound quite turbulent and uneasy, with the finale revealing some more than competent contrapuntal scoring and heart-wrenching emotion.
