Camera emphasis on Toscanini reveals maestro's technical perfection, his communication skills and his authority, and turns this DVD into an education in conducting. Superimposed images of the conductor with orchestra members make this communicatition easy to appreciate for the viewer.
For me, "The Maestro" was the most important conductor of my lifetime (born December 1942) and, surveying recordings throughout the entire span of his career, the best. This is the fifth and final volume in the series of Toscanini/NBC Symphony Orchestra live concerts.
And Arturo Toscanini surely was a master - perhaps the most towering Maestro of the 20th century. Since the Toscanini Collection was first released on compact disc approximately a decade ago, major innovations have occured in sound restoration. Although the recordings in that collection were issued utilizing the best techniques of the time, it is now possible to go back to the original sources and make more musical and accurate remasterings.

The NBC Symphony Orchestra was one of the world's fabled orchestras. David Sarnoff, chairman of RCA which owned both RCAVictor Records and NBC radio - offered conductor Arturo Toscanini a specially-built orchestra of the highest standards. Toscanini retired after his April 4, 1954, concert. NBC laid the orchestra off, but it refused to die.
The NBC Symphony Orchestra was a radio orchestra established by David Sarnoff, the president of the Radio Corporation of America, especially for the celebrated conductor Arturo Toscanini. The NBC Symphony performed weekly radio concert broadcasts with Toscanini and other conductors and served as house orchestra for the NBC network.
