The Great American Eagle Tragedy is the second and last album by the psychedelic band Earth Opera, recorded in 1969. It is marked by departure of Bill Stevenson and his harpsichord sound, using more guest musicians than on the debut album and use of pedal steel by Bill Keith. The album also had better success on charts then the previous one, but soon after, the group disbanded, paving the way for solo careers mainly for Pete Rowan and David Grisman. All compositions by Peter Rowan, unless otherwise noted.
Earth Opera was an American psychedelic rock group, active during 1967–1969 and featuring Peter Rowan and David Grisman. Both Rowan and Grisman were virtuoso folk and bluegrass performers in Boston clubs, who became caught up in the changes in the music scene in the mid-1960s. They formed Earth Opera in 1967 in Boston, Massachusetts, and were joined by John Nagy on bass, Paul Dillon on drums, and Bill Stevenson on keyboards and vibraphone.
If Earth Opera's self-titled debut album reflected the eclectic, ambitious pop styles of the Flower Power, Sgt. Pepper era of 1967, the group's follow-up, The Great American Eagle Tragedy, took into consideration the changed musical climate of 1968, when arrangements became more stripped down and hard rocking, with country-rock beginning to make inroads. Earth Opera sounded like it had been made by a studio band that had never played out, but the country-rock opener of The Great American Eagle Tragedy, "Home to You," paced by the pedal steel guitar of guest Bill Keith, was a road song in subject matter and feel, played by a band that sounded like it had spent some time before.

Earth Opera, released in 1968, reflects the Sgt. Pepper influence rampant at the time, and Rowan's songs are draped in arrangements that reference folk, rock, jazz, jug band, classical and country, sometimes all within the same track. Although a couple of these cuts, like the truly odd "The Red Sox Are Winning" and the feathery and delicate "The Child Bride," are fascinating efforts, much of Earth Opera is simply too ornate, affected and needlessly complicated to work as anything other than a curio of the time
