Cecil Payne (December 14, 1922 – November 27, 2007) was an American jazz baritone saxophonist born in Brooklyn, New York. Payne also played the alto saxophone and flute. He played with other prominent jazz musicians, in particular Dizzy Gillespie and Randy Weston, in addition to his solo work as bandleader. Payne received his first saxophone at the age of 13, asking his father for one after hearing "Honeysuckle Rose" performed by Count Basie with Lester Young soloing.

This LP is an excellent showcase for the underrated bop baritonist Cecil Payne. Accompanied by a sympathetic British rhythm section (pianist Joe Palin, bassist Alan Cooper and drummer Ron Parry), Payne had a rare opportunity during the live session in 1966 to be the only horn and to stretch out on four of his originals (they clock in between 9:18 and 12:05). The waltz "Brookfield Andante" and "The Opener" are highlights of the easily recommended set. Track Listing.
