Talking with Cecil Taylor was nearly as memorable as watching him play. We became friendly in 2011, not long after I moved to Fort Greene, where he had lived since the early 1980s. Taylor’s rendition of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s This Nearly Was Mine on his 1960 album The World of Cecil Taylor-one of the last standards he would ever perform-captured its heartbroken mood with quiet caresses of the keys, punctuated by imaginative, often vertiginous leaps in dynamics. His own, his mysterious, crepuscular 1966 piece Enter, Evening -had an alluring streak of sensuality, even eroticism.

This release presents the complete original LP The World of Cecil Taylor (Candid 9006), which was the first album recorded by Cecil Taylor for the legendary Candid label. The group consists of the Cecil Taylor Trio, with Buell Neidlinger on bass and Dennis Charles on drums, plus Archie Sheep on tenor sax joining them on two songs. An extra song and two alternate takes from the same sessions have been added here as a bonus.Recorded in New York, October 12 (tracks 2 & 4-6) & October 13 (tracks 1,3 & 7-8) 1960.
