Cecil Taylor performing in Amsterdam in 1988. In the early 50s, he studied classical piano at the New York College of Music in Manhattan and then at the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he also immersed himself in the composing methods of Stravinsky, Bartók and Elliott Carter. He started visiting jazz clubs, becoming intrigued by the piano methods of Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, the sophisticated but overlooked Cool School pianist Dick Twardzik, Dave Brubeck (for the density of his chords), Monk, and the earthy, blues-rooted Horace Silver.

Remembering Cecil Taylor, who was born on 25 March 1929, in Long Island City, New York. His father, Percy Clinton Taylor, was head chef at the Rivercrest Sanitarium in Astoria. Taylor said that his dad loved the hymn 'Wade in the Water' and was a big fan of Louis Armstrong. His mother, Almeida Ragland played piano and danced and had appeared in silent films. Cecil Taylor said: "She was into Count Basie and Duke Ellington and gave me a book by Arthur Schopenhauer when I was 1.
Cecil Taylor is generally acknowledged to be one of the pioneers and great innovative sources of free jazz. Classically trained, his music is characterized by an extremely energetic, physical approach, producing complex improvised sounds, frequently involving tone clusters and intricate polyrhythms.
