Greil Marcus, writing in Rolling Stone magazine at the time of its release, praised the song, stating that the band has "never done anything better". Although the first word was spelled "Gimmie" on that album, subsequent recordings by the band and other musicians have made "Gimme" the customary spelling.

Gimme Shelter Lyrics. Ooh, the storm is threatnin' My very life today If I don't get me no shelter I think I'm gonna fade away. War, children It's just a shot away, it's just a shot away War, children It's just a shot away, it's just a shot away (Yeah). Ooh, see the fire is sweepin' My very street today Somebody oughta gimme some shelter Or I think I'm gonna fade away. War, children It's just a shot away, just one shot away It's just a shot away, it's just a shot away.

Merry Clayton (born December 25, 1948) is an American soul and gospel singer and an actress. She provided a number of backing vocal tracks for major performing artists in the 1960s, most notably in her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter". Clayton is featured in 20 Feet from Stardom, the Oscar-winning documentary about background singers and their contributions to the music industry.

Gimme Shelter is track 4 on the album; Midnight Rambler is track 3 and you can hear the same instrument (albeit less distorted) starting at just :07 into that song. And I think this is about the finest track ever cut by one of the finest bands in teh history of rock . but I hope I'm not because she and manson both kick ass. Chelsea from Nyc, OrSupposedly written by Keith while he was waiting on Anita outside of the set of the filming of the ovie "Performance".

Striking when the iron was hot, Merry Clayton’s solo debut album arrived less than a year after her remarkable contribution as backing singer to the Rolling Stones’ 1969 hit Gimme Shelter. As the album title reveals, she takes the tune for a spin in her own vehicle, giving it the burning urgency of a Stax hit. Though her voice doesn’t break here with the same awesome timbre heard on the original recording, this version is easily more danceable. Clayton’s voice does break in all the right places on an opening cover of James Taylor’s Country Road, playing more soulfully than ol’ .
