Side one is composed of previously released studio recording from 1968 and 1969. Side two consists of tracks previously released on the US live album Got LIVE if you want it! in 1966. Gimme Shelter" was written by the Rolling Stones' lead vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, the band's primary songwriting team. Richards began working on the song's signature opening riff in London whilst Jagger was away filming Performance. As released, the song begins with Richards performing a guitar intro, soon joined by Jagger's lead vocal

Gimme Shelter is track 4 on the album; Midnight Rambler is track 3 and you can hear the same instrument (albeit less distorted) starting at just :07 into that song. And I think this is about the finest track ever cut by one of the finest bands in teh history of rock. Hey Carol, the Rolling Stones are worth more than your life. They've got more talent in their crap than you will ever have. I hope they outlive you.

Gimme Shelter is the opening track of the Rolling Stones’s 1969 album Let It Bleed (where it was actually spelled Gimmie Shelter, but the more accurate spelling was adopted afterwards). Backup vocals are sung here by female guest vocalist Merry Clayton. Jagger explained in the 2003 book According t. he Rolling Stones: The use of the female voice was the producer’s idea. It would be one of those moments along the lines of ‘I hear a girl on this track – get one on the phone.
