Lyrically, State of Our Union took a long look at Reagan-era America as the gulf between the rich and the poor began to divide the nation, with "You Can't Ride the Boxcars Anymore," "Two Kinds of Love," and "Good Times Tomorrow, Hard Times Today" all exploring issues of economic injustice, and even the less obvious political songs often having a progressive. subtext ("WDIA," a tribute to the great Memphis R&B radio station, deals with how the love of music brought together black and white listeners in the 1960s).

The Long Ryders were among the more successful with their second full-length album State of Our Union remaining, arguably, their strongest release. Beginning with the anthem-like Looking for Lewis and Clark and stopping off for the Old-West nostalgia of Lights of Downtown, the recalling of ancient radio waves ( Wdia ) and other tributes to times well past ( Here Comes That Train Again, You Just Can’t Ride That Train Anymore ), the Long Ryders were determined to ignore the present and create their own world.

The Long Ryders’ second album, the one that opens with the powerful ‘Looking for Lewis and Clarke‘, has been given the deluxe 3-disc box set treatment for this reissue on Cherry Red Records. It hardly seems worth saying that the original album is one of the finest ever releases in the genre that didn’t yet know it was called Americana. This is the holy water sprung from the sacred source. With songs like ‘Capturing the Flag‘, ‘Good Times Tomorrow, Hard Times Today‘, the arse-kicking ‘WDIA‘ and the rock and roll boogieing title track it sounds as fine today as it did in 1985
The Long Ryders were an anecdote to formula stadium rock and wimpy synth-pop. The band featured Sid Griffin on guitar, autoharp, and harmonica, Stephen McCarthy on guitar, steel guitar, mandolin, and banjo, Tom Stevens, bass, and Greg Sowders, playing drums and percussion. These albums precede a brand-new studio album to be released in 2019 via Cherry Red (and Omnivore in North America). The Long Ryders kicked off their major label debut, State of Our Union, with one of their most anthemic and most explicitly political songs, "Looking for Lewis and Clark," and that tune set the tone for the rest of the album - State of Our Union found the Long Ryders reaching for a larger audience at the same time that they were. 1 Looking for Lewis and Clark The Long Ryders 3:12. 2 Lights of Downtown The Long Ryders 3:11. 3 WDIA The Long Ryders 3:44. 4 Mason-Dixon Line The Long Ryders 4:19.
The Long Ryders were an anecdote to formula stadium rock and wimpy synth-pop. The Long Ryders were formed in 1982 by young American musicians influenced by Gram Parsons, C&W, The Byrds, and the punk scene found in their hometown of Los Angeles. The Long Ryders were an anecdote to formula stadium rock and wimpy synth-pop.
