The Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21, is a piano concerto composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1829. Chopin wrote the piece before he had finished his formal education, at around 20 years of age. It was first performed on 17 March 1830, in Warsaw, Poland, with the composer as soloist. It was the second of his piano concertos to be published (after the Piano Concerto No. 1), and so was designated as "No. 2", even though it was written first.
Chopin composed his popular Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, No. 2 when he was about twenty. This popular nocturne is in rounded binary form (A, A, B, A, B, A) with coda, C. The A and B sections become increasingly ornamented with each recurrence. The penultimate bar utilizes considerable rhythmic freedom, indicated by the instruction, senza tempo (without tempo). Nocturne in E-flat major opens with a legato melody, mostly played piano, containing graceful upward leaps which becomes increasingly wide as the line unfolds. This melody is heard again three times during the piece.
Chopin Frederic Chopin Nocturnes Nocturne Op 9 No 2 E Flat Major Mi Majeur.
Written before Chopin finished his formal education, the piece betrays a certain sophistication in terms of formal development. It features an extremely dominant piano part, with the orchestra leaving all responsibility for musical development to the soloist, thus ignoring the interplay that is the mainstay of an instrumental concerto. Piano Concerto no. 21 - Complete Score. 21 - Piano Part with Orchestral Cues (1). 21 - Piano Part with Orchestral Cues (2). 21 - Complete Parts (String Quintet ar. 21 - Complete Score (Piano 4 hands ar. Recordings.
Chopin gives no indication of attempting to elevate the form to new levels in these works. Rather, these pieces are written in the contemporary stile brillante tradition, in which the point is not to develop a musical idea through dramatic transformation, but to showcase the performer’s skills, stunning the audience with virtuosic displays through the presentation of loosely-connected musical ideas. The concerto concludes with a quick-paced rondo in which Chopin proudly declares his Polish heritage. The mazurka dance rhythms of his native land are here transformed into a dazzling display of pianistic skill which brings the piece to a fittingly exciting finale.
