Andrea Parkins plays accordion, keyboards and laptop, Jim Black is an internationally acclaimed free-drummer, and this eventful gig bristles with contrasts. Softly lamenting sax notes and strings-like keyboard effects crank up into headlong flights with the versatile Parkins mimicking a guitarist. Sometimes there's edgy, gallumping funk, sometimes prowling Jurassic Park noises backing Eskelin's clustered multiphonic bursts of melody and trademark bent-note sounds. It's a free-jazzer's record really, but a pretty inviting one. Topics.
