The David Grisman Quartet is the primary musical vehicle for mandolinist David Grisman. Founded in 1975, the band has featured the talents of well over a dozen musicians in the decades since, including such seminal newgrass/new acoustic artists as Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall and Rob Wasserman. The band's music has been characterized as a mixture of bluegrass, jazz (particularly gypsy jazz and jazz fusion), while also including other elements.

His album The David Grisman Quintet and his work with Stephane Grappelli and Jerry Garcia have earned him legendary status. Grisman's "Dawg music" is known for its tasteful incorporation of folk, country and Swing. Aside from his brilliant skills as a soloist, Grisman's impact on Bluegrass cannot be understated. Drawing on early jazz, Grisman extended the melodic range of his bright mandolin improvisations, while adding a developed, syncopated rhythmic impetus. His album The David Grisman Quintet and his work with Stephane Grappelli and Jerry Garcia have earned him legendary status.

David Grisman is normally associated with the bluegrass wing of country music, but his music owes almost as much to jazz as it does to traditional American folk influences. Because he couldn't think of what to call his unique, highly intricate, harmonically advanced hybrid of acoustic bluegrass, folk, and jazz without leaning toward one idiom or another, he offhandedly decided to call it "dawg music" - a name which, curiously enough, has stuck.
