Songs by Tom Lehrer is the debut album of musical satirist Tom Lehrer, released in 1953 on his own label, Lehrer Records. In 2004 it was included into the National Recording Registry.
Tom Lehrer's 1953 debut album, Songs by Tom Lehrer, was a cheaply recorded (though the sound is reasonable) studio set in which the singing comedian accompanies himself on piano. In general, Lehrer's work has dated so that it sounds a bit fey and quaint in the light of bolder subsequent comedians (musical and otherwise). In addition, Lehrer would re-record all of these songs (and more than once), and the live versions on 1960s Tom Lehrer Revisited are less inhibited. Then the album was re-recorded, yet again, in the mid-'60s for Reprise in stereo, with a few minor lyric changes (. changing "reefers" to the more contemporary slang of "pot"); Lehrer later said he regretted the decision to do the stereo re-recording.
Songs by Tom Lehrer was the first album to provide what was offered by its specific title. In 1966, after the success of Lehrer’s live album That Was the Year That Was, Reprise Records reissued several of Lehrer’s previous albums. Dissatisfied with the audio quality of the original Songs by, they persuaded him to re-record the songs. Lehrer also made some lyrical changes that he later regretted. This re-release has never been released on CD. The re-release of Songs by has a different track listing than the original presented here. Songs by Tom Lehrer Q&A.

Something of a reluctant performer, retiring from touring less than 10 years after commencing his career, Tom Lehrer achieved a degree of popularity even he could not have envisaged. It was whilst studying mathematics at Harvard University that he began writing comic songs, usually for the entertainment of his fellow students, but such was the reaction he decided it was worth spending a little money to record Songs By Tom Lehrer professionally
Tom Lehrer, born as Thomas Andrew Lehrer, is an American singer-songwriter and mathematician. He is known for his dark humour and satire. As a singer he often parodied popular songs and wrote controversial lyrics dealing with the social and political issues of his times. As a child, he used to receive classical piano lessons but gradually his interest shifted towards pop music. Thus, he recorded his first album, ‘Songs by Tom Lehrer’ under his own label Lehrer Records in 1953. Lehrer was a comic paradox who successfully managed two seemingly unrelated careers-one as a mathematician, the other as a musician.
