Released May 16, 1966. Pet Sounds Tracklist. 1. Wouldn't It Be Nice Lyrics. Recorded and released in 1966, not long after the sunny, textural experiments of California Girls, Pet Sounds is widely regarded as the first concept album in the rock genre. The album went on to be extremely influential in the art rock and baroque pop movements and is praised as one of the greatest rock albums ever made. The album even inspired The Beatles to create the critically lauded Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, Theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," "Caroline No," and "Sloop John B" (the last of which wasn't originally intended to go on the album) are the well-known hits, but equally worthy are such cuts as "You Still Believe in Me," "Don't Talk," "I Know There's an Answer," and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times.
Brian Wilson's 1997 remix of Pet Sounds let's US finally hear this immortal album in stereo. If you need some pointy-headed pundit to sell you on the merits of Pet Sounds, your money might be better spent on an ear specialist. Brian Wilson's gift to 20th-century music elevated this pop album into a beguiling musical and emotional cogency that still operates outside pop culture's fickle space-time continuum-and limited critical lexicon. Many think that the stereo version of "Pet Sounds" is inferior to the mono version. To me, the stereo version is also a revelation. I've had the stereo and mono versions on CD for several years now and both are amazing.
The Beatles stated that The Beach Boys Pet Sounds album had a major influence on them and the making of their 1967 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. But the two groups were playing a public game of cat and mouse. On hearing The Beatles Rubber Soul album, Beach Boy Brian Wilson proclaimed he was going make ‘the greatest rock album ever made!’ Released in May 1966, Pet Sounds is now regarded as the masterpiece of composer-producer Brian Wilson and is often hailed as one of the best and most influential albums in pop music
Pet Sounds is the eleventh studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released on May 16, 1966. It initially met with a lukewarm critical and commercial response in the United States, peaking at number 10 in the Billboard 200, a significantly lower placement than the band's preceding albums.
The Beach Boys are an American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. The group's original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and their friend Al Jardine.
It's extremely difficult to write anything about Pet Sounds, the 1966 Beach Boys album, without being affected by the weight of Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson Legend. For years, the Beach Boys created the most joyful, catchy, and fun songs imaginable
Pet Sounds, though, was a sustained act of complex creation, one part work of orchestral ambition, one part proto-concept album. A nervous breakdown on a flight between LA and Houston in December 1964 had prompted Brian Wilson to refocus his energies from touring and promotion to the more enjoyable pursuits of songwriting and the boundless potential of the recording studio. If the role of the rest of The Beach Boys was diminished on a musical level, Pet Sounds was still a triumph of vocal layering. It certainly wouldn’t have been possible without the input of Wilson’s brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, Al Jardine and new member Bruce Johnston. But Wilson wasn’t done.
