Sunflower Bean is an American rock band from Glen Head, New York and Brooklyn founded in 2013. The band consists of Nick Kivlen (lead guitar and vocals), Jacob Faber (drums), and Julia Cumming (bass and lead vocals). The group has released two albums, Human Ceremony (Fat Possum Records, 2016) and Twentytwo in Blue (Mom + Pop Music, 2018). Kivlen and Faber were childhood acquaintances who both enrolled at North Shore High School in Glen Head, New York in 2009.

Human Ceremony fizzes with invention, from Wall Watchers ’ fuzzy rock crunch to the sublime, sail-away soul of I Want You to Give Me Enough Time. Elsewhere on an endlessly inventive set there’s hypnotic dream pop ( Easier Said, Creation Myth ) and irresistibly melodic freak-outs ( This Kind of Feeling, I Was Home ). Easy to tell Sunflower Bean recorded debut LP Human Ceremony in their teens. Referencing Dylan, Kahlo, and Dalí on the album art, and employing blunt influences (Black Sabbath, David Bowie) in their music, the Brooklyn trio depict themselves as the try-hard hipster kids in class. Flooding with existential crisis ("I just don't know my place in the world"), their angst comes accentuated by random stadium rock breaks ("Creation Myth") and fuzzy vox ("Come On").

Sunflower Bean find magic within friction. The New York trio’s full-length debut album, Human Ceremony, emerges at the intersection of dreamy modern psychedelica and urgent fuzzed-out bliss. That push-and-pull colors the aural tapestry of these three musicians-Jacob Faber, Julia Cumming, and Nick Kivlen.
