In 1998, Rage left Death Row and the music industry generally to focus on acting, appearing in an episode of Kenan & Kel. She also went on to feature in many television sitcoms and movies

Necessary Roughness is the debut album of rapper The Lady of Rage. After appearing on high-profile, critically acclaimed Death Row releases-including Dr. Dre's The Chronic and Snoop Doggy Dogg's Doggystyle-and releasing her own, Dr. Dre-produced single "Afro Puffs" (which does not appear here), Rage released her debut on June 24, 1997.

Lady of Rage was Death Row's attempt to reach the female market, but there isn't that much difference between her 1997 debut, Necessary Roughness, and the bulk of latter-day Death Row releases. Like many other later-period Death Row records, the form is more important than the content.
