Byrd in Hand is an album by Donald Byrd engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. It was recorded in May 1959 and was released in the same year as BLP 4019 and BST 84019. It was remastered in 2002 and released on CD as Blue Note 42305. Witchcraft" (Cy Coleman, Carolyn Leigh) 8:29. Here Am I" (Byrd) 8:25. Devil Whip" (Byrd) 4:42. Bronze Dance" (Walter Davis, J. 6:42. Clarion Calls" (Walter Davis, J. 5:41. The Injuns" (Byrd) 6:13. Donald Byrd - trumpet. Charlie Rouse - tenor saxophone.
For this excellent album, trumpeter Donald Byrd teams up with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, baritonist Pepper Adams, pianist Walter Davis, J. bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Taylor. Together the sextet performs three Byrd originals, two Davis songs and the standard "Witchcraft.
Byrd's warmly burnished sound, fluent technique and ful swing was rooted in the style of Clifford Brown, but his gangly, rhythmically loose phrasing was a unique calling card right from the get-go. As Byrd matured in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he tempered his hummingbird flourishes with a cooler sensibility and phrasing. Byrd recorded prolifically both as a sideman and a leader, appearing on scores of recordings on the Savoy Records, Prestige, Riverside Records and Blue Note labels.
Chant is an album by American trumpeter Donald Byrd recorded in 1961 but not released on the Blue Note label until 1979. I'm an Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande" (Johnny Mercer) – 7:39. You're Next" (Donald Byrd) – 7:25. Chant" (Duke Pearson) – 8:50. That's All" (Alan Brandt, Bob Haymes) – 9:33. Great God" (Byrd) – 6:58.

Unfortunately this one isn't as essential as some of the others that are out of print domestically. Byrd is joined on this May 1959 session by Pepper Adams on baritone sax (someone with whom he had a lasting partnership in the late 50s and early 60s on Blue Note), Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, Walter Davis Jr. on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums
Byrd In Hand, Byrd’s second album for Blue Note Records, features him with his frequent collaborator, baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams. The front-line is augmented with tenor man Charlie Rouse and the rhythm section includes Walter Davis J. Sam Jones and Art Taylor. The proceedings kick off in elegant style with a gorgeous rendition of Witchcraft that makes expert use of a rhythmic suspension. Simply put, the sound is amazing, making the treasures found within Byrd in Hand that much easier to enjoy. Track Listing: Witchcraft; Here Am I; Devil Whip; Bronze Dance; Clarion Calls; The Injuns. Personnel: Donald Byrd - trumpet; Charlie Rouse - tenor saxophone; Pepper Adams - baritone saxophone; Walter Davis Jr. - piano; Sam Jones - bass; Art Taylor - drums.
