Soon Over Babaluma (1974). The album collects unreleased music from throughout the band's history from 1968 until 1976, and both the band's major singers (Damo Suzuki and Malcolm Mooney) are featured. The cover photos were taken in Pantheon room of The British Museum. The album was produced by the band themselves, and produced a single, "Hunters and Collectors", backed by "Vernal Equinox", which was issued on Virgin that same year.
Can – Soon Over Babaluma. Label: United Artists Records – UAS 29 673 I. Format: Vinyl, LP, Album. But "DizzyDizzy" and "Come Sta, La Luna" are monumental. Come Sta delivers an incredible balearic feel from the psychedelic seventies, Dizzy Dizzy is a sweetly hypnotic composition with carefully crafted and subtle arrangements. Reply Notify me 3 Helpful.
Sparse and intense, Soon Over Babaluma sees the band carrying on with vocals from Schmidt and guitarist Michael Karoli and highlighting the latter's frenetic guitar work. The five tracks on the album range in length from 5'44" to 11'12" and most display the typical Can sound, although there is more of an emphasis on bouncy rhythms, and brighter textures on the first three tracks. Specifically, there is a bossa nova in there and come to think of, Splash has almost an east coast (hot) jazz feel to it - only in the loosest sense of the style however. Jaki is an excellent drummer and he does a fantastic job with both styles - in fact his propulsive style really drives this entire album along.
Following Future Days, Suzuki got married to a Jehovah's Witness and left the band. After trying out several singers, Can eventually decided to keep things to themselves for Soon Over Babaluma, as Karoli took over vocals in most cases, with Schmidt helping from time to time. Due to circumstances, the record sounds obviously transitional, and was in fact the last one Can would complete using their tried and true straight-to-stereo method, before upgrading to more modern, multi-track methods afterwards. Dizzy Dizzy" is something like Can's version of ska (kraut-skank?), and features the first of several future Karoli forays using violin, on which he's surprisingly competent. His refrain of "got to get it up, got to get it over" serves the insistent, space-bounce of the track, and though the band would misstep on world music attempts in later years, this was pretty interesting.
Album Name Soon Over Babaluma. Music StyleKrautrock. Members owning this album6. 2. Come sta, La Luna.
Album by Can. Dizzy Dizzy. Splash (instrumental). Quantum Physics (instrumental). Holger Czukay – bass, vocals. Michael Karoli – guitar, violin, vocals on "Dizzy Dizzy" and "Chain Reaction". Jaki Liebezeit – drums, percussion. Irmin Schmidt – keyboards, vocals on "Come Sta, La Luna".
As such the album provides a bridge between Damo’s last gasp Future Days and the following Landed where the new style vocals are delivered with more confidence.
