Carl Maria von Weber. Weber: Der Freischütz. Kleiber, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Schreier. Carlos Kleiber's 1973 Dresden production of the Freischütz was an absolute sensation: tonally, artistically, and politically. It journeys to the depths of Weber's angst-ridden German forest in the company of the trusty hunters' choir. But there are real comforts here too: just listen to Agatha's "Leise, leise", sung by Gundula Janowity with her wonderfully free-floating voice. The state orchestra sound as though Kleiber has them under hypnosis.
