Zen Arcade is the second studio album by American rock band Hüsker Dü, released in July 1984 on SST Records. Originally released as a double album on two vinyl LPs, Zen Arcade tells the story of a young boy who runs away from an unfulfilling home life, only to find the world outside is even worse. The album incorporates elements of jazz, psychedelia, folk, and pop, and also features piano interludes, all of which are rarely touched on in the world of hardcore punk.

Hüsker Dü’s second full-length studio album and its first for SST Records. The album is a concept record about a boy who runs away from home to escape a difficult situation only to find the world outside is just as harsh. The album’s Turn on the News was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.

Hüsker Dü /ˈhʊskər ˈduː/ was an American rock band formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1979. The band's continual members were guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist/vocalist Greg Norton, and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart. Hüsker Dü first gained notability as a hardcore punk band, later crossing over into alternative rock. Mould and Hart were the principal songwriters for Hüsker Dü, with Hart's higher-pitched vocals and Mould's baritone taking the lead in alternating songs.

Album · 1984 · 23 Songs. Pushing their post-hardcore concepts even further, Hüsker Dü created a sprawling and brilliant concept album, the first hardcore opera. Broken Home, Broken Heart follows a boy running away from an abusive home, with frantic guitars and even more frantic drumming. On Somewhere, the boy finds love amid guitars that are no less ferocious. The album ends with Reoccurring Dreams, a 14-minute instrumental that pushes sound to the brink of madness before ending with an eerie calm, telling a story inside of a story. Zen Arcade Hüsker Dü. Alternative.

Zen Arcade is probably the closest hardcore will ever get to an opera. A kind of thrash Quadrophenia, it traces a young buck’s passage through a series of social and emotional wastelands, whipping like a Japanese bullet train through bristling, unadorned folk ( Never Talking to You Again ), surprisingly poignant bamalama (the icy death lament Pink Turns to Blue ) and awesome white-noise constructions and backward tape tricks (the trippy raga collage Hare Krsna ). Hüsker Dü is as hard and fast as they come; an earlier release was called Land Speed Record

This album was also too long to be justified given that the album rarely does anything different across the over an hour of play time. I'm sure the group has better work out there and this is likely just a dud to start with, but this album doesn't do much to encourage me to seek out more of their discography.

℗1984 SST Records
Recorded & mixed at Total Access, Redondo Beach, CA, October 1983
All songs ℗© Cesstone Music (BMI)
Whoever wrote the songs sings it, except for track C1
Track D2 is live-done track, no overdubs or funny stuff
Everything on the record is first-take, except for A1 & C4, which started too fast
We all throw chairs during track B2
There were only two out-takes from these sessions, "Dozen Beats Eleven" and "Some Kind Of Fun"
The whole thing took about 85 hours, the last 40 hours straight for mixing
Carducci wants another album already, but not another double LP

Early pressings were issued in a heavy pasteboard/tip-on gatefold sleeve (inside cardboard brown, not white). May include an SST catalog insert listing releases up to SST 028.

I have a couple of copies of this that doesn't seem to match any of the listed releases.Mine has the following:SST-020 on the spine, but the catalog number is not on the vinyl labels or the back cover.Side A: Real World, Deadly Skies, It's Not Funny Anymore, First Of The Last Calls.Side B (45 RPM): Lifeline, Diane, Out On A LimbSide A Etchings: SST-020-A THAT OLD STAINLESS CHARITY. IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW, SHIRLEY. L-15122, kdisc (stamp)Side B Etchings: SST-2-027-D ...WITHIN THE CIRCUITS THAT MAKE PAC-MEN DIE AND VESSELS DISINTEGRATE L-17380Held up to the light, it's translucent brown, but black without light. Indicating this seems to be Quiex II vinyl.Seems to be very similar to this release: https://www.discogs.com/H%C3%BCsker-D%C3%BC-Metal-Circus/release/6548039But with different B-side tracks.

What is "tip-on sleeve"?I have copy with brown inside cardboard, but i don't know what it means.ThanksLuigi
Reighbyra
By "inside" you mean the open gatefold or the pockets where LPs are stored?
Carrot
Tip-on jackets are made where the artwork is printed on thin paper which is then applied to a cardboard shell (as opposed to standard jackets where the artwork is printed directly on the cardboard). All copies of Zen Arcade, even the current pressings, have tip-on sleeves. Early copies are brown cardboard on the inside, newer more current ones are white. Other examples are the first pressings of Black Flag "Jealous Again" 12" or the Germs "GI" LP.
Freaky Hook
Not all of them. I bought my copy first week out in Minneapolis. Matrix numbers match above exactly as well. Definitely not Quiex II vinyl. Yes, it does have $12.98 on the spine. Regarding purple / blue: I think they are the same, just a printing variation.
GoodBuyMyFriends
Bought mine when released in '84 (sheesh) as well. Still have it. In NM condition. Does have $12.98 on spine. Still have the SST catalog sheet with it. Vinyl does not appear brown at all. Inside is blue printing.
Agrainel
Thanks for the info. That purple/blue gatefold issue was bugging me. Ha, nuts. I thought I had found an easy way to check. Almost all of my SST records from the mid 80s to early 90s are on Quiex II, but there's always exceptions. Must of been nice to live in Minneapolis in the 80s! Did you catch a lot shows at First Avenue?
Jerdodov
Want an easy way to check for pre-90s pressings? Put the record up to a bright light, it should look translucent brown and opaque black when taken away from the light. Most copies pressed in the 80s were on this Quiex II type vinyl.
Malojurus
This, and the rest of their catalog produced by Spot, (especially New Day Rising) is begging for a proper remastering. Sound is too thin. Wish they could put aside their differences to arrange for a good remaster/reissue campaign.
AfinaS
Does this version also have the S12.98 on the spine? I can just barely make it out in the pictures.
Celen
Yes it has the S12.98 on the bottom of the spine
Riavay
Sorry, please disregard my earlier reply. I thought I owned this particular version but it turned out to be the version that you linked to (with a purple inside rather than a blue one).
Boraston
I've come across a copy that has the matrix numbers for this version, but the inside of the gatefold is purple, instead of blue, like this version: https://www.discogs.com/H%C3%BCsker-D%C3%BC-Zen-Arcade/release/2639254 Any help identifying it would be great!
Uafrmaine
I have the same copy bought mine in Liverpool around about 1990
