Contra is the second studio album by the American indie rock band Vampire Weekend, produced by band member Rostam Batmanglij and released in January 2010 on XL Recordings. The album title is intended as a thematic allegory and reference to the Nicaraguan ies and the 1987 video game Contra. The album received critical praise and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. It was recognized as one of The 100 Best Albums of the Decade So Far by Pitchfork in August 2014.
Contra is the second studio album by Vampire Weekend. They tried many new musical styles, including dubbed and slowed vocals, clattering pseudo-punk, African guitar riffs, grand choral swells, and many more over the course of this record. Many of the lyrics on this record are on dense topics, such as young love and Third World strife. Ezra, while wanting to discuss these topics, never let it take away from the enjoyment of the music, as his melodically abilities never let any of the songs feel too heavy to delve into.
Contra is still a Vampire Weekend album and it's certainly one that past fans will presently like. Vampire Weekend's second album, Contra, finds the New York-based band pushing its eclectic, intellectual indie rock further using a mash-up of musical genres, clever wordplay and emotional heft. 80. Contra is the sound of a band driving themselves to very satisfying extremes. New York prepsters stick to their Paul Simon-goes-indie formula on successful second album.
Like Contra, the album debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 - making Vampire Weekend the first rock band on an independent label to enter the charts at number one with two consecutive albums - and it also won the Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 2014. Early in 2016, Batmanglij announced he had left Vampire Weekend but would continue to play with them in the future. That year, the band began work on their fourth album with collaborators including Rechtshaid, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Danielle Haim, and Dirty Projectors' Dave Longstreth
When Vampire Weekend released the single Harmony Hall in January, some publications were quick to join the dots between their return and fashion’s supposed volte-face to prep style. Vampire Weekend are back and it’s good news for everyone, reads Esquire. Firstly, it heralds the return of their warbling Ivy League pop, something the world has clearly been staggering on without for way too long now. Of course, Vampire Weekend hasn’t been making that kind of music or dressing that way for a long time
Vampire Weekend is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 2006 and currently signed to Columbia Records. The band was formed by lead vocalist and guitarist Ezra Koenig, t Rostam Batmanglij, drummer Chris Tomson, and bassist Chris Baio.
It's a sweatless calypso, buttoned-up and breezy. Considering the ferocious objections to Vampire Weekend's self-titled debut, "Horchata", and the rest of Contra, is brave music. It's like they've spent the past two years building a bionic version of the band- not only brighter and tighter, but weirder.
