Gladys Knight & the Pips were an R&B/soul family musical act from Atlanta, Georgia that remained active on the music charts and performing circuit for three decades. Starting out as simply The Pips in 1952, derived from a cousin's nickname, the founding members were Gladys Knight, brother Merald "Bubba" Knight, sister Brenda Knight and cousins Eleanor and William Guest.

In 1966, Gladys Knight & the Pips signed to Motown Records' Soul subsidiary, where they were teamed up with producer/songwriter Norman Whitfield. Knight's tough vocals distinguished them from Motown's pop-soul roster. Between 1967 and 1968, they had major R&B and minor pop hits in the . The same year, she and the Pips were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Eleanor Guest died of heart failure the following year. Released in 2001, Knight's sixth solo album, At Last, made her a solo Grammy winner when it won the award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album.

When Gladys Knight & The Pips sign with Buddah Records in early 1973, they will work with producer Tony Camillo (Tony Camillo’s Bazuka) on Imagination, their first album for the label. The basic track is recorded at Camillo’s studio in Somerville, NJ with former Funk Brothers Andrew Smith (drums) and Bob Babbitt (bass), along with Barry Miles (piano) and Camillo himself (electric piano). Knight and The Pips record their vocals Artie Fields Recording Studio in Detroit. Issued as their second single on Buddah in August of 1973, it is an immediate smash, simultaneously climbing the pop and.

Not long after the album was released, Gladys Knight and The Pips joined Buddah Records where they were heavily promoted and eventually found their well deserved place in the limelight. While their work with Motown was considered secondary to that of Diana Ross and her Supremes or Marvin Gaye, for example, at Buddah Gladys and her Pips became front runners. The album remains relatively neglected, although it is an collection of outstanding songs and finely detailed arrangements.
