Count This Penny is an Americana four-piece who hails from Tennessee but has called Madison home for the last few years. Since they’ve arrived, they’ve shifted from a reliable folk and country outfit to one of our city’s most talented and cherished acts. The band’s latest single, Get Your Gun, follows in their tradition of writing songs that sound completely removed from the information age but are only the better for it. The track is a show-stopper, a real heart sinker; it moves like a slow, defeated procession set to march behind steel-guitared guides and Amanda Rigell’s bruised vocals. Counting sheep is a mental exercise used in some cultures as a means of putting oneself to sleep. In most depictions of the activity, the practitioner envisions an endless series of identical white sheep jumping over a fence, while counting them as they do so.
