Dalton var her. 1. Showing official release groups by this artist.

Dalton was born Jean Karen Cariker in Bonham, Texas, but was raised in Enid, Oklahoma. She also lived in Stillwater, Oklahoma and Lawrence, Kansas, before relocating to Greenwich Village in the early 1960s. Her bluesy, world-weary voice is often compared to jazz singer Billie Holiday, though Dalton said Bessie Smith was a greater influence. She sang blues, folk, country, pop, Motown-making over each song in her own style. She played the twelve string guitar and a long neck banjo

To hear Karen Dalton sing "How Sweet It Is" or "When a Man Loves a Woman" is to hear the song completely transformed. Dalton even changes the lyrics at the end of "When a Man Loves a Woman", fitting them to her female perspective.
