Celebrated for his mélodies, he was also an accomplished lieder artist. This intimate 1961 performance of Die Schöne Müllerin is notable for its textural clarity and his often daringly soft dynamics, matched in Dalton Baldwin's lyrical accompaniment. I fell in love with Gérard Souzay's 1964 recording of Schubert's 'Die Schöne Müllerin' more than forty years ago but had never gotten it on CD; although I believe it is this same performance long on a Philips CD, coupled with 'Winterreise', 'Schwanengesang' and 20+ lieder. That set, though, is hard to find and when found can be purchased at an exorbitant price. His later Schubert lieder recording on Testament (with 'Winterreise' and 'Schwanengesang'), coming almost ten years afterward, shows Souzay's voice in poor estate

Gérard Souzay, who has died aged 85, sang mélodies for four decades after the second world war; for the first three of them, he was considered the leading exponent of the genre. As successor to his notable mentor, Pierre Bernac, Souzay proved well able to hold his own. His mellifluous and supple voice was allied to a bright intelligence in the treatment of texts that manifested itself in everything he tackled. Souzay - then 27 - began to build his international career: as I recall, his early appearances in Britain were revelatory. The basis of his popularity in recital lay in his easily produced, vibrant, warm baritone. It was used by its owner with an innate sensibility and an unfaltering sense of style. Then he formed a long and close musical partnership with Dalton Baldwin. Souzay was a scrupulous artist almost to a fault, never wholly satisfied with his achievements and apt to be tetchy when discussing them.
