Recognized as one of Schubert’s masterpieces, this song cycle tells the story of a wandering miller who follows a brook to a mill and meets the beautiful miller’s daughter (the title translates as The Beautiful Miller’s Daughter ) and falls in love with him. However, she’s cool to his advances, and she later falls in love with a handsome hunter. In despair, the miller drowns himself in the brook.
