I Want to Break Free" is a song by the British rock band Queen, written by their bass guitarist John Deacon. It appears in the album The Works (1984), and was released in three versions: album, single and extended. It came to be included in most live concerts by the group, in several videos and in The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert where it was sung by Lisa Stansfield.

The second single from Queen’s 11th studio album The Works, I Want To Break Free gained notoriety primarily for its controversial music video. The video featured the band dressed as the cast of the popular soap opera Coronation Street and has Freddie Mercury dancing with members of the Royal Ballet Theatre. Mercury plays a housewife who wants to break free from his constraining life.

Queen bass player John Deacon wrote this from the male perspective of the women's liberation movement. This song became an anthem for the ANC in South Africa in the late '80s when Nelson Mandela was still in jail and the white government's apartheid policies were still in place. The video for this song parodies a popular British television soap, Coronation Street. Lisa Stansfield sang this at the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. Mark from Dartmouth, Ns'I want to break free from your lies/ You're so self-satisfied I don't need you'. One of my favourite rock lyrics of all time. What better way is there to tell somebody to off?

Queen's video for "I Want to Break Free", which is considered a camp classic in the UK but effectively ended their career in the United States, where it received a negative reaction and was boycotted by MT. Title: Queen: I Want to Break Free (Video 1984). Show HTML View more styles.
