Shaking the Habitual is The Knife’s fourth and final album, a highly experimental epic which moves away from the techno stylings of 2006’s Silent Shout.

Shaking the Habitual is, inarguably, an achievement. It is the Knife's most political, ambitious, accomplished album, but in a strange way it also feels like its most personal: It provides a glimpse into the desires, intellectual enthusiasms and (unsurprisingly dense) reading list guiding one of music's most shadowy duos. At its most mesmerizing, its conceptual rigor and occasional inscrutability are overpowered by a disarming earnestness: It is a musical manifesto advocating for a better, fairer, weirder world.

On their fourth studio album, the Knife don't change their habits as much as they push themselves to extremes. Despite its 100-minute length and political overtones, musically Shaking the Habitual isn't as radical a change as Silent Shout's sustained dread was from its predecessor, the relatively cheery Deep Cuts.

The Shaking the Habitual Tour is a concert tour by Swedish electronic music duo The Knife in support of their album Shaking the Habitual. It is their first live appearance in seven years since the Silent Shout Tour in 2006, as well as their final tour. When asked about the live shows in interviews The Knife had repeatedly been unforthcoming.

Shaking the Habitual needs no introduction, is an album that screams what it is: One of the best of 2013 so fa. Expand. 0 of 0 users found this helpful. And then "Ready to Lose" closes this epic electronic soundscape. Overall Shaking the Habitual is amazing it really stands out in modern music, but at some points I feel it can get lost in all it's glory, and whilst not perfect in every aspect, it is very impressive to hear in it long running time.

As interesting as this album is, it's a bit of a trainwreck. A bloated monstrous 2-disc assault that takes the weirdness from Silent Shout but removes all pop sensibilities and catchy melodies. You're left with a lot of pure atmosphere and insanity but it all feels extremely hollow for me and more like they are trying to make an artistic statement. And it feels really hypocritical to release an album with a "fuck rich people" vibe when you're as rich as The Knife have gotten from how much they earned on their earlier stuff. Sorry but maybe if this was their first album I could defend the political feminist punk attitude but from someone like The Knife it just doesn't work. It's fine having an album with a few lengthy songs but when almost none of the songs here are less than 6 minutes and some of them reach 10-20 minutes in length, you're kind of left with something that is frankly unlistenable on its own unless you just like this sort of stuff. Personally I much prefer The Knife's earlier stuff and this just feels like they're ending on a very embarassing note for me...

The thing is though the knife probably aren't that rich? I guess they're talking about the super rich people who don't pay any taxes and those people who just want more and more. I think they make a good point! Sure they're a successful group and probably live comfortable lives but nobody is saying that earning money and being a success is a bad thing. I think their gender and feminism stuff seems genuine too but ..anyway I think the album is decent, I agree that it's over long and some tracks [especially the 20 minute ambient one] are kind of pointless but for me tracks like full of fire, wrap your arms around me and raging lung are up there with their best. 3/5 i'd rate it.

Sorry for those who were expecting a new "Silent Shout". Well, I was too, and at the first two or three listening sessions I thought "What the hell!". But, getting rid of useless expectations I started to appreciate this incredible album. No melody here, lots of sick and morbid atmospheres, there's noise and dissonance you would expect from someone like Nurse With Wound or Organum! I praise their courage to turn the page and leave behind the easiness of "Silent Shout". "Raging Lung" is their new masterpiece, that song gave me the shrivels when I saw them live and both the stage setting and the music seemed to conjure the spirit of Coil for a moment. Well done!
