The First Days of Spring is the second studio album by the English band Noah and the Whale. It was released on 31 August 2009. The band began playing the new material at concerts in 2009 to a favourable response. The First Days of Spring notably differs from Noah and the Whale's debut album, Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down, by the presence of a running narrative describing the break-up of a relationship and by the lack of female vocals.
It's the first day of spring And my life is starting over again Where the trees grow, the river flows And its water will wash away my sins For I do believe that everyone Has one chance to fuck up their lives Like a cut down tree, I will rise again And I'll be bigger and stronger than ever before If. I'm still here hoping that one day you may come back If I'm still here hoping that one day you may come back
Despite its shortcomings, The First Days of Spring marks a welcome escape from such labels as "quirky" and "twee", with a musical maturity that requires only an equivalent lyrical magic to amount to something truly special. After a lackluster debut with Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down, Noah and the Whale returns with what might be the ultimate break-up album. Going from total sadness and longing in the brilliant title-track to the eventual "moving on" phase in "Blue Skies" and "My Door is Always Open," The Last Days of Spring is the perfect diagram of the emotional turmoil following heartbreak.

Noah and the Whale, with producer Emery Dobyns, have crafted perhaps the most luxurious-sounding break-up album since Beck's Sea Change, a quantum leap from the DIY feel of their debut. The title track is majestic in its self-pity, the strings hovering like sea mist over Fink's faltering vocal – "I do believe that everyone has one chance to fuck up their life/ But like a cut-down tree I will rise again/ And I will be bigger and stronger than ever before" – for six minutes before rallying towards a spectacular climax. Cliches are forgivable in break-up records – after all, there are only so many ways to say "I miss you" – but The First Days of Spring is carpeted with them wall-to-wall. Fink is "still here hoping that one day you may come back" (the title track), staying up till "four in the morning" (Our Window), asking to "go back to the start" (My Broken Heart) and comparing himself to "a fox trapped in the headlights" (Stranger).
All these tunes consisting of little more than splashes of piano and guitar, a little percussion clatter, and Fink's front-and-center vocals are quite some change from the whirlygiggery that made Peaceful so tiring. It's the closest thing to Peaceful as you get on Spring, a big bouncy number with swirling instrumentation that's kind of Andrew Lloyd Disney about its goofiness. It works okay in such a small dose, but it'd be strangely placed virtually anywhere on the LP, and while it's a sad song, the fluttery strings create an odd mood shift.
