The album was defined as their most collaborative, a project that found Daryl and John writing and recording together along with their new crackerjack band, with Oates saying, We made this record in a very traditional, old school style. We had a great band and were just dove into the studio and cut tracks.
On their self-titled 1975 album, Hall & Oates proved themselves to be smooth soul-pop operators, scoring their first Top 10 hit with the smoldering, R&B-tinged Sara Smile. But the band showed their range as well, delivering hand-drum-laced groovers like Alone Too Long and synth-streaked character studies like Gino (The Manager), adding up to an album that laid the groundwork for the duo’s world-dominating reign over pop music. On their self-titled 1975 album, Hall & Oates proved themselves to be smooth soul-pop operators, scoring their first Top 10 hit with the smoldering, R&B-tinged Sara Smile.
