Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album Deluxe. Blue Note, the most successful movie ever made about jazz, is a testimony to the passion and vision of these two men and certainly swings like the propulsive sounds that made their label so famous. The film incorporates gobs of classic Blue Note music - the label's roster included just about every viable figure in modern jazz - along with live footage both vintage and more modern, scads of black-and-white still photos, interviews (Herbie Hancock, Max Roach and any number of behind-the-scenes folk), anecdotes and more. The best of these is a b&w clip of a Sonny Rollins intro that is just mesmerizing! (The worst, and only hiccup, is a clip of Cassandra Wilson performing a dull "smooth jazz" arrangement.

Blue Note is unquestionably the most iconic jazz label there has ever been. In saying that, it may well be the most iconic record label of all time. When Alfred Lion started the label in 1939, recording boogie woogie pianists Meade Lux Lewis and Albert Ammons, his intention was to bring to the public the kind of music that he felt was important. It is a mission that he never wavered from, nor have the Blue Note albums that have followed in his illustrious footsteps. However, to become a major brand, and remain so, it can only be achieved with quality music and the thousands of Blue Note albums down the years attest to this fact. They may not all be to your ear or the kind of music you like, but it’s impossible not to acknowledge the sheer quality of the recordings listed her. nd for the vast majority of those that failed to make the cut.

Album cover design and jazz photography on the Blue Note Records. Notes and pictures from Birka Jazz Archive. BLUE NOTE started the 12" LP era in mid 1950s with some trad jazz albums, but then launched the legendary 1500 modern jazz series. RED MILES took over as the label´s art director and he defined a style that came to be assocoiated with New York hard bop. The first gem in the 1500 series is Miles Davis (1501) and the last is Bennie Green (1599) + the little "bastard" at the end - The 3 Sounds LP, which has number 1600. Beside those, another memorable cover is the close-up photograph on the Gigi Gryce LP for the Signal label (see the Various page). Today he is famous for his vivid and breathtaking close-up photographs of flowers and seashells.
