Recording sessions began in New York in October 1965 with numerous backing musicians, including members of Dylan's live backing band, the Hawks. Though sessions continued until January 1966, they yielded only one track that made it onto the final album-"One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)".

Fans have speculated that the use of blond on the album cover and blonde on the album listing is a reference to Frank’s bisexuality and the themes of duality between masculinity and femininity in his life; with blond being the masculine form, and blonde being the feminine. The word blonde itself holds two interpretations. The first is that children normally have blonde hair that darkens to brown as they get older.

Blonde on Blonde captured Dylan at his most prodigious and inspired. The Cutting Edge release documents the amount of work put into the record and it's loaded with classics. Highway 61 and Bringing It All Back Home lack the ragged maturity that Dylan exuded on Blonde, and the album was greatly enhanced by the monster band of mostly Nashville musicians, leading to sonic tones superior to earlier recordings. He is also one of the first rock artists to have released a double album with Frank Zappa. This album is called "Blonde On Blonde" and is simply the most ambitious album of Dylan's extraordinary discography. This album is an incredible masterpiece. It would probably be in my list of the 10 most essential rock albums.
