War is the third studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Steve Lillywhite, and was released on 28 February 1983 on Island Records. The album is regarded as U2's first overtly political album, in part because of songs like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day", as well as the title, which stems from the band's perception of the world at the time; lead vocalist Bono stated that "war seemed to be the motif for 1982.

War also reached No. 23 on the Top Pop Catalog album chart and became U2's first Gold album in the US, eventually being certified multi-platinum by the RIAA with 4 million units sold. It also earned a Gold record in Switzerland and Silver record in the UK. In the Hot Press Reader's Poll, it was voted No. 1 best album and best LP sleeve. UK magazine New Musical Express voted both the album and sleeve as No. 3 in its annual poll. And in the New Zealand Rip It Up Poll, War was voted the No. 1 album. Release Date: 28 февраля, 1983.

Sunday Bloody Sunday - War. Two Hearts Beat As One. New Year's Day. War (Remastered) Deluxe News. War," released early in 1983, was U2's fullest and loudest album yet - an album that started to separate the band from their New Wave peers. On this album, U2 both embraced and began wrestling with the identity of a Band with a Mission. Prior to this, their albums had featured oblique statements or pictures of uncertainty (the turmoil of adolescence on "Boy", the spiritual uncertainty of "October"). On "War," the band clearly and defiantly wrestled with the punk rock questions of politics, war, and personal/national identity.

The energy and insistence of the opener is sustained across the album. Two Hearts Beat As One" and "New Year's Day" are thrilling, finally showing the intense passion Bono's voice was capable of imparting when he had the right words to wrap it around. The U2 we've known ever since had arrived on War, and even today it sounds vital. As much as cynical critics and listeners often swipe at U2 for their earnestness, it's still refreshing to hear a band that cares so much, wants to be heard by so many, and isn't afraid to show it.

War’ was a loud and clear statement that U2 were ready for the world. Published on. March 12, 2019. The next time we heard from them on an album, they had developed into something more outspoken, more political and even more muscular. The message went out, just like the title says, with a single released on New Year’s Day, 1983. Fearlessly addressing the Polish Solidarność movement that dominated the headlines of the period, it proved that political motivation and rock credibility can be bedfellows after all.
