Comes a Time is the ninth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, released in October 1978. Comes a Time" is also the title song and a single release from the album. The album originally started out as a solo record, but when Young played it for Reprise executives they asked him if he would consider adding rhythm tracks to what he already had. Young agreed, and the end product was Comes a Time. Two songs ("Look Out For My Love" and "Lotta Love") were backed by Crazy Horse.
Comes a Time isn’t deep, it’s not threatening, and Young can’t have intended it to be: he can dive deeply and make his threats stick when he wants to. Rather, the album is meant to be straight and honest - folkish, like Young’s small-club World Tour at the Boarding House in San Francisco last May. The clatter and clash of Young’s best music (from Cowgirl in the Sand to Like a Hurricane ), the jagged, rearing emotion that explodes even out of the messy rehearsal tapes for Alabama and Words (released on Journey through the Past) is missing, or muted.
Young agreed, and the end product was Comes a Time. For many years it was rumoured that Young had personally purchased some 200,000 vinyl copies of Comes a Time having been unhappy with the album's sound, owing to damage that occurred to the master tape during shipment to the mixing facility. In a March 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, Young claimed that he, in fact, used the 200,000 LPs as shingles for a barn roof.
Six and a half years later, Comes a Time finally was the Neil Young album for the millions of fans who had loved Harvest, an acoustic-based record with country overtones and romantic, autobiographical lyrics, and many of those fans returned to the fold, enough to make Comes a Time Young's first Top Ten album since Harvest. He signaled the album's direction with the leadoff track, "Goin' Back," and its retrospective theme augmented with an orchestral backup and the deliberate beat familiar from his number one hit "Heart of Gold. Of course, Young remained sly.
Neil Young released ‘Comes a Time’ in October 1978. Although time has since regarded the album with less critical acclaim than such initially misunderstood classics as Tonight's the Night, Comes a Time easily and quickly became Young's biggest seller since Harvest. The songs, all originals save for a beautiful cover of Ian and Sylvia Tyson's "Four Strong Winds," continue to hold up remarkably well. Larson's backup vocals on songs like "Lotta Love" and "Look Out for My Love" (backed by a much smoother, less ragged-sounding Crazy Horse) are a particular standout, prompting Young sideman Ben Keith.
