Includes "Isn't She Lovely". Songs in the Key of Life (1976) was the highest high point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than Innervisions and Talking Book, this two-LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. This album is probably in the top 10 of every music fan in existence. It was the first album I fell in love with as a 15yo kid when it came out, and if it's not my all-time fave still, it's right near the top. It has everything. First off, being a double-album means it's filled with a lot of music, which is a huge bonus when an album is really good (or great, such as this one is).

One of those rare double albums (double and a half, really, since it originally came out on 2LPs and an EP), Songs In the Key of Life might just be Stevie Wonder’s true masterpiece. Rarely have I found such an uplifting set of songs which manage to avoid schmaltz and address hard political issues whilst at the same time maintaining an upbeat attitude. It’s almost impossible not to have your spirits lifted when it comes on, and musically speaking it’s also incredibly adventurous, with Stevie not only knocking out some all-time soul classics but also dabbling in funk, jazz fusion, a little prog.
He took his life experience and put them all into Songs in the Key of Life, Motown founder Berry Gordy reflected in a 1997 documentary. Wonder had been under contract to Gordy’s label since he was just 11 years old. Now a self-assured adult with a steady string of hits stretching back a decade, a quarter life crisis malaise began to take hold. The superstar began to openly discuss quitting the music industry altogether and moving to Ghana, where he believed his ancestral lineage could be traced. Wonder’s sister Renee Hardaway also makes a vocal contribution to Songs in the Key of Life, delivering the scornful You nasty boy! that punctuates the album’s lead single, I Wish. The final track completed for the project, its lyrics originally dealt with war and cosmic spiritual stuff until Wonder attended a Motown company picnic.
