A somewhat less ambitious record than Mudlark, from a recording standpoint, Greenhouse is a true solo record that offers several surprises. Over a third of it is made up of vocal numbers, including two that are absolutely superb. Tiny Island" may be the best track here, a song by Al Gaylor, inspired by the death of Jimi Hendrix, that offer one of Kottke's best vocal performances of his whole career.
Leo Kottke – Leo Kottke is an acoustic guitarist. He is known for a style that draws on blues, jazz, and folk music. He currently resides in the Minneapolis area with his family, in concert, Kottke intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career, played solo on his 6- and 12-string guitars. By then, he had gained a following largely due to his performances at folk festivals. With his 1976 eponymous release, he moved to Chrysalis Records, in the early 1980s, Kottke began to suffer from painful tendinitis and related nerve damage caused by his vigorous and aggressive picking style.
It is sometimes referred to as Did You Hear Me? due to the handwritten caption on the photo on the cover. It peaked at on the Billboard Pop Albums charts.
Leo Kottke is a wonderful guitar player. I have seen him live. One person and he can sweep the whole place away! But I think that is missing his great gift. He has a great sense of humor. And he knows how to project that. There are many great guitar players and most I know evoke a seriousness and great intensity in their playing. I really enjoy the vocal tracks too. As a matter of fact, I like them very much. There is a warmth and sincerity in Leo's vocal style, and the vocal song selections are perfectly suited. Of course, Leo's guitar work is fascinating - a mixture of folk, jazz and other Genres, it is, at once, both dynamic and soothing. Everywhere I keep my silence, no sound returns to me" (from "Tiny Island").
