Sleepwalker is the fifteenth studio album by the English rock group, The Kinks, released in 1977. It marked a return to straight-ahead, self-contained rock songs after several years of concept albums. It is the first album in what critics usually call the "arena rock" phase of the group, in which more commercial and mainstream production techniques would be employed. The album also marks the last appearance of bassist John Dalton, who left the band during the recording sessions
Arista had made it clear they would not accept any concept albums from the Kinks, and Sleepwalker, their first effort for the label, makes good on the band's promise. Comprised entirely of glossy arena rockers and power ballads, the album is more of a stylistic exercise than a collection of first-rate songs. Ray Davies contributed a handful of fairly strong songs, highlighted by the exceptional "Juke Box Music," which sees him in a shockingly resigned frame of mind, claiming that rock & roll is just rock & roll, and nothing more
Sleepwalker", written by Ray Davies, is the third track (and debut single) from The Kinks' 1977 album of the same name. Sleepwalker" was reportedly written about Ray Davies's move from London to New York City at the time. The insomniac Davies was then adapting to the 24-hour schedule of the busy city.
Sleepwalker" was released as the first single from album of the same name. It charted in the American Hot 100 (peaking at the first single from The Kinks to do so since "Apeman". It also hit in Canada. NME stated, "Set to a backdrop highly reminiscent of the hallowed -down riffing of Phase 1 Kinks. the main squeeze is that The Kinks are making good records again. Melody Maker's opinion of the song was mixed, stating "Kinks fans/lovers of 'Waterloo Sunset' won't find 'Sleepwalker'.
